Welcome Letter
New Wolf Families (2nd graders),
My name is Khayyan Ruiz and I will be the Wolf Den Leader (Den 5) for your son and new scout!
Our Assistant Den Leaders are: Mr. Chuck Leverich, Mr. Mark Jobe, and Mr. Thom Shaffer.
If your son is not a second grader, please let me know and I'll make sure your son gets into the right den.
Our den will plan specific activities throughout the entire school year as part of the Wolf achievements,
and they can be worked on either at den meetings or at home with the family. However, since you are registered,
anything you do can count as a fulfilled achievement as well.
I know some of you have gotten your uniforms. The boys look great.
For those who have not, try to have it by the end of September at the latest.
You will need the blue cub scout shirt, Yellow Wolf neckerchief, blue/yellow hat, cub scout belt,
Wolf socks are optional (any dark blue socks are o.k.), and all the patches
(just tell the lady at the scout shop you have a new scout, Wolf rank in den 5 of Pack 169 and she will get you everything you need).
The scout shop is at 4999 Northcutt Place, Dayton, Ohio 45413 (corner of Needmore and Northcutt--just past Dixie Drive).
You can also pick up a Wolf Handbook to see what the achievements are.
In the back of the book, there are numerous electives that can be worked on as well.
In addition, you can start earning academic and sports belt loops and pins.
You can purchase the Academic and Sports Guide at the scout shop as well,
or you can find the requirements online at: http://www.derose.net/steve/guides/scouting/BeltLoopPinRequirements.html
The first thing we (between home and den meetings) will need to do (usually by November)
is to have your scout earn the Bobcat Badge--requirements are in the Wolf Handbook and some will be covered
pretty much on every den meeting. No other cub scout badge can be awarded prior to the Bobcat Badge.
Wolf Badge should be ready to be awarded in February timeframe at the Blue and Gold Banquet.
So, as you can see, there is plenty of time and not to worry, everyone will get it done by then.
Something else you can work on at any time is the BSA Family Award--book can be bought at the scout shop.
This can be earned once a year. Also, the Religious Award for Catholic Scouts is Light of Christ
--this can be done usually by the end of October. The book for this is also available at the scout shop.
For any non-Catholic scouts, the religious award is usually God and Me for most other Christian religious
and you can check with the scout shop for any other religions. Father Simone is willing to award all religious
awards regardless of religion.
Attached, you'll find a copy of the Bobcat requirements (for you to work with your new wolf) and the Pack/Den 5
schedule for this year. Some of the Den activities and meetings are not included since I'm still working on it,
and some of the projected dates are still tentative.
