The 2009 Official Pinewood Derby Rules
Cub Scout Pack 2, Florham Park

I GROUND RULES
A. The Pinewood Derby race is open to all registered Cub Scouts in Pack 2. Cars are to be built and decorated as a joint Cub Scout/adult partner project with the Cub Scout doing as much of the work as possible.
B. Family members and siblings are permitted to race in the "Family Race" after the conclusion of the Cub Scout rank races.
C. Cars must be built using the official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Car kit available through the BSA. Pre-cut cars are not allowed.
D. Cars must have been made specifically for the 2009 Pinewood Derby. CARS MADE FOR OR FROM A PREVIOUS YEAR'S DERBY ARE NOT PERMITTED.
E. The race will be conducted by rank.
F. Each car will race 4 times, once down each lane. This is done to eliminate any perceived notion that one lane races faster than another.
G. Each car's races will then be averaged, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be determined for each rank, using each car's average time.
H. A Grand Final Round will be run after all other ranks are done racing, with the winner's from each rank racing each other. There will be trophies awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall.
I. All Scouts must be present at the beginning of their races. Cars for no shows or late arrivals will not be allowed to race.
J. Cars may only be raced if they have been impounded at the weigh in.
II CAR SPECIFICATIONS - The following rules will be strictly enforced!
New Height Specification for 2009. Max. Height 2 ¾"
Every car must have the scout's full name on the bottom of the car
Please use masking tape written in pen or permanent marker.
A. Maximum overall width (including wheels and axles) shall not exceed 2 3/4".
B. Minimum width between wheels shall be 1 3/4".
C. The entire bottom of the car must be flat, having no protrusions, and with a minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and track of no less than 3/8".
D. Maximum overall length of the car shall not exceed 7".
E. Maximum height will be 2 3/4". From wheel bottom to the top of the car including any Decorations or additions
F. The wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles) may not be changed from the kit body distance of 4 3/8".
G. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces (141.75 grams). The readings of the official race scale(s) will be considered final. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided it is securely built into the body or firmly affixed to it. No loose materials of any kind are permitted on the car, which includes mercury and spring devices.
H. Details such as steering wheel, driver, spoiler, decals, painting, and interior details are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, height, and weight specifications.
I. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
J. Only the official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby car kit wheels and axles may be used. Wheels and axles may not be modified except for seam removal.
K. Wheel bearings, washers, or bushings are prohibited.
L. The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
M. The car must be freewheeling with no type of starting device or propulsion.
N. The car must ride on all four wheels.
O. The rolling surface of the wheels must be flat. The addition of any ridges or wafering on the surface is not permitted.
P. Only white Teflon lubricant such as Dry White may be used, no liquid lubricants.
III Inspection and Disputes
A. Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Team. The Inspection team has the right not to accept those cars that do not meet the rules. Pack 2 cars will be inspected and impounded at the weigh-in.
B. Once a car is registered it will be placed in the pit area and will not be handled by anyone except race officials until the conclusion of racing. Pack 2 will have 2 senior scouts return the cars to the staging area after each race.
C. Unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or member of the audience will be grounds for expulsion from the competition round and/or the race area.
IV Awards
A. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for the overall pack will receive trophies.
B. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of the rank races will receive trophies.
C. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the Family Race will receive trophies.
D. Trophies will be awarded to the following special categories: Most Original Car, Best Designed Car and Best Cub Scout car . Pinewood Derby Committee members will select the winners. The decision of the PWD Committee is final.
