Backpacking to McAfee's Knob
17-19 October 2003
Comments from the scouts and scout leaders about the trip:
- If you were to take the trip again, what would you keep the same?
- The scenery
- Everything
- I liked the fact that we were able to spend two nights on the
trail. It's a lot more fun to be able to move from one campsite to
another. That's real backpacking.
- Tent city
- If you were to take the trip again, what would you change?
- I would have brought more food
- Have the slower scouts in a different group.
-
Have the leaders carry my backpack.
- I would like to see this trip (and others like it) arranged so that
boys of different ability ranges can hike in different groups so
everyone gets the most out of the trip.
- What would you like to tell your parents about the trip?
- The trip was fun and exciting
- I love it and everything about it
- It was really fun, especially since I was with friends
- I would tell my parents how well the scouts of Troop 8 can hike.
Almost all the scouts are experienced hikers now, and it shows!
- We had a wonderful 3-day hike on the Appalachian Trail and got to see one
of the most photographed locations on that trail. The scouts had a
great time, too, and set up a contraption they call "Tent City"
out of tarps, rope, and tents. Although they had a little trouble
with leaving trash around, they picked it up and even carried out an old
tarp and a destroyed tent they found.
- What would you like to tell your grandchildren about the trip?
- How pretty McAfee's Knob is
- It was beautiful and I am going to take you
- The gaps we jumped, the raccoons we saw, and the cool cliffs
- McAfee's Knob has a beautiful view
- The view from McAfee's Knob is unbelievable! It's a perfect place
to stop and spend as much time as you can afford. The weather and
the view was the best I've ever seen.
- Clambering on the boulders and small cliffs was lots of fun.
